Former Bills safety Aaron Williams to visit Texans

The Texans have had issues at safety almost every season since the creation of the franchise. Safety is a position that the Texans do not prioritize in the draft and the only big invest they’ve made in free agency was the failed signing of Ed Reed. In fact, the Texans let their best safety in franchise history, Glover Quin, sign with the Lions when he hit free agency in 2013. Quinn later said the Texans did not even make him an offer and he went on to make the Pro Bowl for Detroit in 2014.

Health is the big concern with Williams

Aaron Williams has struggled with health for most of his career and has yet to play sixteen games in a season. His best year was in 2013 when he played in fourteen games and recorded 60 tackles and 4 interceptions. His 2016 season was ended early by a collision with Dolphins wide receiver, Jarvis Landry, and Williams was only able to play in seven games. Profootballtalk is reporting that Williams will visit the Texans this week.

The former Longhorn played corner for the Bills before he was moved to safety, so he does possess the cover skills for the position that the Texans covet. Current Texans safety, Andre Hal, was a former corner that moved to safety and has been a reliable player on the back end. Quintin Demps started at the other safety spot and left the team in free agency to sign with the Bears in the offseason. The Texans have an opening at safety and Williams will have an opportunity to compete for the job if he is signed. He will fight for the spot with another often injured player, Lonnie Ballentine, who has all the raw talent in the world, but can’t stay healthy. Finally, Kareem Jackson played quite a bit of safety at the end of last season, but he’s mostly been playing corner during Texans OTAs. It looks to be another season where the Texans will have some serious questions on the back end, and that is nothing new in Houston.
