Chavo Guerrero: ‘wrestling’s not a carny business anymore, it’s mainstream now’

On this week’s edition of Bischoff on Wrestling, Eric interviewed four-time WWE Cruiserweight champion Chavo Guerrero.

In their conversation, Chavo discusses how he’s “diversifying his life” by getting more involved in other projects.  This lead to a conversation about wrestling’s place in the mainstream media. Sure, wrestling is nowhere near as prominent as it was in the 90s, but Chavo’s current “diversification” shows us how relevant wrestling, and wrestlers, for that matter, can truly be. He mentions that wrestling is “not a carny business anymore. It’s huge. It’s really mainstream now.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has gone from being an established wrestler to being the highest paid actor in Hollywood.  Wrestlers of this era like John Cena and Randy Orton have worked on projects outside of the WWE flagship. Heck, Dave Batista is part of a multimillion dollar franchise with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Chavo believes that this is not an accident. It’s no secret that the WWE is constantly trying to be in the spotlight of social media. One can take a look back to how they addressed LeBron James and Kevin Love referencing wrestling after they won the NBA Finals to see this. Chavo believes, though, that Hollywood is starting to come around wrestling and sees the potential in those involved in wrestling. “People in Hollywood are really starting to realize that wrestlers and people involved in wrestling [are] not just that stigma. Now these people realize that wrestlers are actors, comedians, they can make you laugh, they can make you cry, they can produce, they have an eye for a camera… They are seeing the talent that is out there.”

Chavo has kept himself busy since leaving the WWE in 2011. In 2014, he joined Lucha Underground as a talent and producer. This year, Chavo and Lion Forge comics released a comic book series loosely based on him. Plus, Chavo will be working on the Netflix sitcom based on G.L.O.W as a “stunts coordinator”.
