Verlander won’t make Astros the Warriors of baseball

Yesterday on The Blitz, Fred and A.J. talked about the struggles of the Astros and if they need to make a trade soon. After last night’s loss to the Rangers, Houston has lost six out of their last eight games, and the guys think it’s time for the club to make a move. Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray have been rumored to be available, so how bad does it have to get before the team brings in some starting pitching?

Verlander wouldn’t make the Astros a super-team

Baseball isn’t held to the same standards as other sports, especially when it comes to blockbuster trades that happen at the deadline. Nobody would call the Astros a super-team if they made a deal for a top tier pitcher. Most of the squad has been built through the draft, so it’s hard to make that argument. The Astros did make a trade for Brian McCann and sign Carlos Beltran to a contract this off-season, but that hardly makes them a super-team. Fred makes the point that basketball is different because one player can make such a big difference, and even landing Justin Verlander would not guarantee anything for the Astros.
