Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 2 Preview

“Stormborn”

Craig Koshkin

If you need to catch up on what happened in the Season Premier, you can read my Episode 1 Recap.

Due to the fast moving nature of the “next on Game of Thrones” scenes from episode 1, it’s going to take some speculation to figure out what may be coming to Westeros. Being titled Stormborn gives a pretty big clue that this episode is going to be pretty Daenerys-centric.  Episode titles are also very impactful in GoT. Think of some of the best episodes and their titles. There was The Rains of Castamere that gave us The Red Wedding. Hardhome showed us possibly the most chilling moment when the people of, well, Hardhome, were attacked by and turned into wights.

For those of you who don’t like that Daeny storyline, fear not. I do believe everyone will get their time, but it will be an episode dedicated to how other characters become tied into Danerys’ impending rebellion. For more clues as to how this exactly will play out, I had to hit the episode description on the DVR…

Daenery receives an unexpected visitor; Jon faces a Revolt; Tyrion plans the conquest of Westeros.

Well throw out the idea that everyone will get his or her time this week. Most of the elements of the description revolve around Daenerys and her pursuit of the Iron Throne. But who is this “unexpected visitor” that’s hinted? Is Euron already knocking on Dragonstone’s doors in an effort to provide Cersei with a present fit for a Queen (Tyrion’s head)? My money is on the arrival of Olenna Tyrell and Elaria Sand from Dorne for two reasons.

  1. We aren’t getting the payoff of a big naval battle so soon.
  2. We can see the Tyrell/Sand duo in the scenes at the end of episode 1, and they were not among the Targaryen arrival party at Dragonstone.

The most interesting part of the description is Jon facing a rebellion. You can see in the preview scenes that the General of the Vale army is yelling, “A Targaryen can’t be trusted” at Jon. I am assuming Sam’s raven made it to Winterfell and Jon is proposing an alliance with Daenerys so that they may mine the dragonglass out of Dragonstone. Seeing as all of these soldiers fought on the side of King Robert’s rebellion, you can see why they would be reluctant to jump into bed with another Targaryen. Obviously they have no idea who they’re talking to. Can Bran just go ahead and be useful so everyone can find out Jon’s lineage? It would be the first time in Bran’s miserable existence that he was useful.

How will Jon handle this discord? Will Littlefinger seize this opportunity to drive a deeper wedge between Jon and Sansa? You can also see in the preview scenes, someone is choking Littlefinger. It looks like Jon Snow’s hair, but that could always be intentional.

As far as Tyrion’s contribution to the description goes, I can see a scene in the War Room at Dragonstone with everyone disagreeing and becoming increasingly fragmented. In steps Tyrion, the man with the master plan, on how Westeros will crumble under the might of this alliance. There will be sarcasm, references to wine, and a not so subtle reminder that Tyrion always is the smartest man in the room. The plan will seem unstoppable, but nothing in this series ever is.

Are we missing anything else? Well there is the fact that Yara Greyjoy and Elaria Sand are seen playing tonsil hockey in the preview scenes. Oh yea, there is also a shot of a growling wolf and a startled Arya. Could this be Arya’s direwolf Nymeria? If you are a book reader, you certainly hope so. If you only watch the show, let me assure you that you hope it is Nymeria because Nymeria is a complete badass in the books. She leads a pack of wolves going around the Riverlands taking revenge for the Starks. **Fingers Crossed**
