Game of Thrones Preview – Episode 3 – “The Queen’s Justice”

Craig Koshkin

“Stormborn” ended on Sunday night with a bang. Euron won a decisive victory on behalf of Queen Cersei and was able to capture the perfect gift for her, Ellaria Sand. If you’re like me, the capture of Ellaria wasn’t even in the top 5 things you could think of when Euron left the Iron Throne saying he would find the perfect gift for the Queen. In hindsight, it is so obvious that I feel like a complete idiot for not seeing it sooner. That victory set up what will be the massive power struggle for the rest of the season. Did Daenerys’ army suffer a crippling blow that they’ll never recover from or is it merely a bump in the road for “The Breaker of Chains?” It seems the upcoming episode will go a long way to answering that question.

Before we get into predictions, let’s look at the “upcoming scenes” from episode 2 as well as the episode description for “The Queen’s Justice.”

Upcoming Scenes:

  • Euron enters King’s Landing (appearing to be towing something/someone behind him) to a parade of joy and laughter
  • Cersei brags about her decisive blow to the Targaryen army
  • A party arrives at Dragonstone
  • Unsullied attack Casterly Rock, Euron humbly bows before the Queen, Sansa walks near a Weirwood Tree
  • Jon Snow and Davos walk into Daeny’s throne room

Episode Description:

Daenerys holds court; Cersei returns a gift; Jaime learns from his mistakes

Short and sweet on the episode description, but when paired with the upcoming scenes, we begin to get a clearer picture of what may be coming.

Daenerys holding court clearly coincides with the party arriving at Dragonstone, that is Jon Snow and Sir Davos Seaworthy. At first glance I saw a rowboat and hoped that we would finally see the return of Gendry (rumored to reappear this season), but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Will Jon bend the knee to his Aunt (allegedly)? Will she, and her advisors, believe Jon’s stories about the White Walkers and what they’re capable of?

This should be an interesting interaction between the two parties. I hope Sir Davos sees Melisandre and fireworks ensue from that. Remember, he said if he ever saw her again, he would kill her.

Cersei returning a gift requires a little more speculation. If I am correct and Ellaria is the gift for Cersei, what would she give in return? I have come up with 2 possibilities:

  • She accepts Euron’s marriage proposal
  • She gifts Yara back to Euron to do with as he pleases

I think it is least likely that she accepts the marriage proposal because she’s in love with her brother and she is way too calculated to jump into that relationship just because of Ellaria. She could gift Yara back but wouldn’t Euron just kill her? Neither of these are appetizing options so there must be a 3rd possibility I am missing. What do you think it is? The only reason I think Cersei may accept Euron’s proposal is the last part of the description…

Jaime learns from his mistakes. Jaime has made a lot of mistakes and grown form them as a character, but what could this specifically be alluding to? If Cersei accepts the proposal, I could see Jaime realizing that his sister will always do what’s best for herself first and decide to be done with her. As commander of the Lannister army, he could learn from previous strategic mistakes and have a plan for the Unsullied at Casterly Rock – which ties in the battle scenes. The one thing I am certain won’t happen, that many fans are hoping for, is that Jaime gets angry and kills Cersei – thus fulfilling Maggie the Frog’s prophecy. That may happen at some point but it isn’t now.

All in all, I think this season is about to hit it’s stride in the upcoming episode and no matter what happens, we will have a much clearer picture of which side everyone has chosen. We may even see the battle score even out at 1-1 if the Unsullied are successful.  It should be an exciting hour and five minutes. What do you think will happen?
