The Blitz: Watson starting week one wouldn’t be shocking

Today on The Blitz, Fred and A.J. talked about the Texans early season schedule, and how likely it would be to see Deshaun Watson starting if Tom Savage suffers an early injury. A.J. wonders if Watson would be the guy to enter the game if Savage goes down, or if the Texans would roll with Brandon Weeden until Watson has a little more experience. From what Fred is hearing, he wouldn’t be shocked if Deshaun Watson opened up the season as the Texans starter. Watson is picking up the system very quickly, and it’s not crazy to think he might win the job outright to start the year.

When is the best time to make the switch?

If the Texans do elect to go with Savage, the way the schedule sets up will have a lot to do with when Watson gets his chance. If we take injuries out of the equation, when would be a good time to hand over the keys to a rookie QB? The Texans face the Jaguars week one, and you would think Bill O’Brien learned his lesson and won’t make a QB switch in the first game of the season like he did against Chiefs in 2015. Next up, the Texans have a Thursday night game against the Bengals, so it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to make the move on a short week of preparation. The next three games will have a big impact in the AFC, starting with New England, then taking on the division rival Titans, and finally playing a top 5 defense in the Kansas City Chiefs. The guys believe that the next game at home against the Cleveland Browns might be the perfect time to start Watson. Houston has a bye the following week, and then head to Seattle to compete against possibly the best defense on the planet. Starting your first game at home against the Browns, and possibly Brock Osweiler, might be the best way to go. The next game is extremely difficult for a rookie QB, but at least he would have one start under his belt, and the bye week to give him an extra week of preparation.
